Who Should Attend Tryouts

The SJ NABA Winter Ball tryout is intended for individual players looking to join a team for the upcoming season.

The tryout may be a good fit for:

  • Former high school, college, independent, or professional players

  • Adults returning to baseball after time away

  • Players who recently moved to the Bay Area

  • Free agents looking for an adult baseball team

  • Players seeking organized, competitive baseball

  • Adults who want to be evaluated for the appropriate talent division

You do not need to know which division is right for you before registering. SJ NABA uses talent-based divisions to create competitive opportunities for players with different experience levels.

Some teams may be looking for advanced players with college-level experience or beyond. Other teams may need dependable role players, developing players, or adults returning to organized baseball.

Coaches may also consider reliability, availability, effort, sportsmanship, coachability, and a player’s ability to contribute to a positive team environment.

What Happens at an Adult Baseball Tryout

Players should expect a structured baseball evaluation that may include:

  • Infield drills

  • Outfield drills

  • Hitting

  • Throwing

  • Pitching evaluations

  • Catcher evaluations

  • General baseball movement and fundamentals

Pitchers should be prepared to throw a short bullpen. Catchers should bring complete catching gear.

Players should also bring their normal baseball equipment, including a glove, bat, cleats, and turf shoes or athletic shoes.

Complete arrival, equipment, and check-in instructions will be sent directly to registered players before the tryout.

Why Play Winter Ball

Winter Ball gives adult players another opportunity to compete, stay active, and continue playing the game they love.

Players join SJ NABA Winter Ball to:

  • Return to baseball after several years away

  • Continue playing after high school or college

  • Compete in an organized adult baseball league

  • Stay active during the fall and winter

  • Meet baseball players from across the Bay Area

  • Join a team and build lasting friendships

  • Prepare for future SJ NABA seasons and tournaments

For many players, adult baseball is more than a weekend activity. It is an opportunity to compete again, improve as a player, and become part of a local baseball community.

What Happens After the Tryout

After the evaluation, eligible players may be selected by an SJ NABA Winter Ball team.

Players who are not immediately selected may be placed on the league’s free-agent list. Coaches can use the free-agent list to fill roster openings before or during the season.

Attending the tryout gives coaches an opportunity to evaluate you directly, but team placement is not guaranteed.

There will be no additional league-wide tryout date, so players interested in joining a Winter Ball team should prioritize attending on September 12.
