Formosa, meaning “beautiful” in Portuguese, is the name given to Taiwan by Portuguese mariners who passed by and stunned by its beauty in 1544.
Taiwan, a small island nation, is famous for its gorgeous view, delicious food, fancy night markets, prosperous electronic manufacturing, just to name a few. However, you absolutely have to mention baseball when you think of Taiwan, especially Little League Baseball. Currently holding the record for most Little League World Series championship titles (17), Taiwan has nearly double that of the runner-up, Japan.
A group of Taiwanese who love baseball and are in different stages of their lives pursuing academic/professional careers in the Bay Area, came together in the Fall of 2017 and formed Bay Area Formosans. By carrying the name of Formosans, this team wants to promote Taiwan, to always play hard and have fun on the baseball field with much passion and dedication, just like the renowned Little League championship teams.
